    Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman

Howard Lyman, the fourth-generation Montana cattle rancher who became one of the most powerful voices for veganism, passed away on October 27, 2026. Best known for his 1996 Oprah appearance and the "veggie libel" trial that followed, he spent decades sharing his story so others could choose kinder food.

Mad Cowboy tells that story in his own words: why he left the cattle business, what he saw inside it, and why he believed a plant-based diet could heal people and the planet. Thank you, Howard.

Which vegan book should you read first?

New to plant-based eating? Start with How Not to Die or The China Study for the health case, then grab a cookbook like Veganomicon or Isa Does It so the change is delicious from day one.

For the ethical case, Animal Liberation remains the book that launched the modern animal rights movement, and Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows is the most approachable introduction for curious friends. Prefer stories? Tender Is the Flesh and The Vegetarian are unforgettable novels.
